Descendant: Portraits Of

Netflix’s, Descendant, COMMUNITY ARCHIVE project

Client: NETFLIX

Descendant tells the powerful and untold story of a small community in Alabama — Africatown — where the descendants of the last known ship illegally carrying enslaved Africans to the US live. Inspired by the moving images of Cudjoe Lewis—a survivor of the Clotilda ship and founding member of Africatown—featured throughout the documentary, we produced an intimate tintype portrait activation at the community film screening in Mobile, Alabama. Descendants of the Clotilda, including executive producer and Africatown descendant Ahmir ‘Questlove’ Thompson, were invited to sit for tintype portraits that will preserve their stories for generations to come. Portraits were taken by Adam Davis of the Black Magic Project.
